to the door of their house. Shielding his eyes against the late afternoon sun, he stepped outside and started toward them.
D.J. allowed the boys to giggle a while longer while she watched Christian approach. Six years of marriage and she still got all choked up every time she looked at him.
"What's going on out here? he asked, taking one look at D.J.'s face and putting his arm around her shoulders to pull her close.
"Your sons convinced their sister to eat an earthworm."
"Liked it, Mama," Josie announced, picking up another worm and dangling it in the air.
The boys fell, giggling, to the ground. Chris choked on a laugh, and D.J. elbowed him in the ribs.
"What?" he asked with an innocent smile.
D.J. threw her hands up in the air and started back toward the house. "I have to go to work. You can handle this one."
Christ caught her before she'd walked three steps. He could still move as quick as a tigerthough she usually let him catch her without much of a fight.
"I just love a woman in uniform," he whispered as he nuzzled her neck. "And those handcuffs are sooo sexy."
"Stop it." She laughed, batting his fingers away from the cuffs dangling at her belt. "I've got to get to the station. I am the sheriff in these here parts, you know."
